Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be stuck in the middle of the end of world? Flesh eating crazies stalk the streets, no where is safe to hide and you can’t trust your fellow man? At least you have your best dame at your side and she is pretty good with a shotgun. Come with us now into the twisted world of Dr. Frightful as he weaves you a tale set in the golden age of radio. Will Ethan and Lily Strange escape their fate? Or will the world tear them to shreds much like their former neighbours are trying to?  Dr. Frightful Presents: Dead Air is a live on stage post apocalyptic radio black comedy with live in-house sound effects.

Reviews

Toronto:

“…physical comedy shows this ensemble at their best.”
“Co-creator Kent, in a role best described as “the silent voice”, demonstrates a knack for comic timing and a cartoonishly elastic face, which he uses to tremendous effect.”

“Spilchen who really blew me away, bringing a surprising feminist angle to a character who might otherwise not have much to do: she looks perfect and dangerous and she wouldn’t have it any other way.”

“The actors are strong, there are several piss-your-pants moments, and it’s definitely worth a $10 punt.”

– Mike Anderson, Mooney on Theatre

“All in all, Dr. Frightful’s circus of lettuce and belt buckles proved to be a successful cabaret of equal parts insanity and horror, making for a show worth visiting this summer at the Toronto’s 2014 Fringe Festival.”

– Adam Borohov, http://thetheatrereader.tumblr.com/

“Stellar sound effects and clever integration of sponsor advertisements throughout the play round out this creative piece.”

-Bloody Underrated

Winnipeg

“Watching the four-person ensemble perform live sound effects during their reading of a gory zombie radio play is easily the highlight of the show.”

“Playwright Grahame Kent, who plays a mysterious and silent technician, stands out for his surly performance.”

“…Dr. Frightful Presents… is great fun”

– Rosie, Fernandez CBC Manitoba

“Dr. Frightful’s strength is its sharp timing — the actors stand before microphones to give their performance, but give and receive no visual cues. The one-hour show also effectively uses radio drama’s sound-effects tools — loud footsteps and squeaky, slammed doors…”

— Alan Small, Winnipeg Free Press

Saskatoon

“Particular highlights were the many blatant product placements worked into the script – thank goodness, one character remarks, for this brand name lumber as we board up our windows.”

“In the second act, the actors’ petty conflicts cross over into the script they’re supposed to be performing, and it’s a lot of fun watching the characters trying to out-improvise each other”

“….this is a frightfully fun performance.”

– Jonathan Charlton, The StarPheonix

Edmonton

“The cast does an incredible job playing characters playing multiple characters, complete with all the sound effects of a zombie apocalypse. The world’s gone to hell in a handbag — and damn, it’s funny.”

“My favourite character is definitely bearded, burly Burt, who only talks on the air and is otherwise sullen, blowing up balloons to be popped as gunshots. He’s played by Grahame Kent, who also wrote the show.”

“Also loved the deliberately obvious product placement within the script-inside-the-script”

– Elizabeth Withey, The Edmonton Journal

“The result is a soundly performed, entertaining tale with laughs throughout. It’s a fun premise capably executed.”

“…the actors are great together”

“It’s a nice little show that handles both its stories with ease”

– Ryan Bromsgrove, Vue Weekly
